Abstract

This article investigates cultural code as a strategic tool for building effective communications in the context of globalization. The study systematizes scholarly research examining the concept of cultural code across various academic disciplines – including philosophy, communication studies, cultural studies, art history, philology, sociology, political science, and others – as well as research addressing the functioning of specific cultural codes within different semiotic systems: language, literature, art, fashion, design, and beyond. The paper explores the theoretical foundations of the phenomenon of contextual adaptation of brands through cultural codes that shape the reception of brand messages in the Russian context. Drawing on case studies, it demonstrates that successful communication in a high–context environment requires the integration of the message into existing symbolic systems through storytelling, local design, and multisensory experience. The study examines the challenge of embedding cultural code into branding communication strategies, positioning cultural code as a driver of economic growth: brands act as mediators of meanings, shaping national identity and securing competitive advantages in both local and global markets. It is shown that in Russian branding, cultural code manifests itself not only through national symbols but also through local identity; regional codes – signs, traditions, and narratives specific to individual cities, regions, and ethnocultural communities – play a significant role. The paper concludes that cultural distinctiveness becomes a key resource for national development. It demonstrates that brands appealing to deep-seated identity codes exhibit a higher degree of authenticity and generate lasting emotional attachment from their audiences.
